SINGAPORE (Aug 13): It is often claimed that China has no legal system. It is a claim made from ignorance. The person usually means that China’s legal system is not the same as the Western ones, so, therefore, there must be no legal system. Unfortunately, for some, this leads to the false conclusion that China is a lawless place where Western companies can break the law with impunity.

They are often shocked to find this is not the case, and react with surprise when the Chinese law is enforced. Too extreme?

Consider the large Australian gambling company that actively promoted gambling to mainland Chinese clients. Their company reports boasted of how their advertising attracted mainland Chinese gambling “whales” to their casinos. This was a clear breach of China’s strong anti-gambling laws, but the company was surprised when senior executives in China were arrested for breaking the law.
