UK start-up builder says one in two young Singaporeans want to be an entrepreneur

SINGAPORE (Aug 19): Days after a survey by the World Economic Forum suggests that scarcely any youthful Singaporean wants to be an entrepreneur, another study seems to suggest otherwise.

A new survey by UK start-up builder Entrepreneur First found that one in two young Singaporeans say they are likely to set up their own company. This is mostly aligned to the youth in the UK, France and Germany, but far behind India, which saw 81.7% of its youth interested in entrepreneurship.

MAS working with financial industry to foster healthy investment ecosystem in three key areas

SINGAPORE (July 11): The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is working with the financial industry to create a healthy investment ecosystem and achieve three objectives.

These are investing for yield in private markets; safe investment for retirement planning as well as investing for sustainability amid climate change, says Ravi Menon, managing director of MAS, at SIAS 1st Master Series Investment Conference.

Temasek's Vertex invests in Binance to expand in Singapore

DUBAI (Oct 23): Vertex Ventures, the venture capital arm of Temasek Holdings Pte, said it made an investment in digital asset trading platform operator Binance to develop a fiat-to-cryptocurrency exchange in Singapore.

The amount of the investment by Singapore’s state investment firm wasn’t disclosed.

Southeast Asia PE deal value surges to $30 bil in 1Q, led by Singapore

SINGAPORE (July 9): Total private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) deal value in Southeast Asia hit a historic high of US$21.9 billion ($29.7 billion) over 19 deals in 1Q18, significantly up from 26 deals worth US$687 million a year ago.

This is according to EY’s Private equity briefing: Southeast Asia (June 2018) report, which offers a roundup of the PE deals and capital activities across major sectors in the region.

SINGAPORE (June 5): Singapore stands poised to connect global investors to the region, as Asia’s dynamism and growth look set to be the defining investment theme over the next decade, says Ravi Menon, managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Speaking at the Nomura Investment Forum Asia 2018 on Tuesday, Menon says global investors are already flocking to participate in the Asian growth story.

Venture capital market off to a strong start for 2018

SINGAPORE (Apr 11): Venture capital (VC) investment in 2018 had a rousing start, with US$49.3 billion ($64.5 billion) raised across 2,661 deals in 1Q, just shy of the global record for a single quarter, according to KPMG’s quarterly report on global VC trends, Venture Pulse Q1 2018.

A record-breaking US$29.4 billion of investment in the Americas – including US$28.2 billion in the US alone – combined with high investment in Asia helped fuel the strong VC market.

Singapore ends 2017 with US$1.2 bil in VC investments; deal activity to remain robust in 2018: KPMG

SINGAPORE (Jan 18): Singapore closed 2017 with US$1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) worth of venture capital (VC) investments across 112 deals, with exit value of investments reaching US$1.6 billion across eight exits and a total of US$732.9 million raised from seven funds.

E-commerce to fuel Southeast Asia's internet economy: Google-Temasek

SINGAPORE (Dec 12): Southeast Asia’s internet economy has experienced unprecedented growth over the past year to exceed Google-Temasek initial research projections, with there to be over 330 million active monthly internet users by end-2017 – a 70 million surge in new users since 2015 at 13% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

Currently, 90% of active users in the region are using the internet on their smartphones, spending an average of 3.6 hours per day on mobile internet, the highest proportion globally.

Asia fintech investment crosses US$1 bil threshold in 3Q

SINGAPORE (Nov 7): Asia fintech funding crossed the billion dollar threshold for the first time in 3Q17, climbing to US$1.21 billion ($1.65 billion) raised across 41 deals.

China accounted for over half of Asia fintech investment at US$745 million.

Globally, a total of US$8.2 billion was invested in fintech funding during the quarter, up 30% year-on-year compared to US$6.3 billion raised a year ago.

The US led the way with some US$5 billion raised across 142 deals, while Europe saw US$1.66 billion of investment across 73 deals.

MAS facilitates startups' access to capital by simplifying rules for venture capital funds managers

SINGAPORE (Oct 20): The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) says a simplified regulatory regime for managers of venture capital (VC) funds will come into immediate effect, following public consultation on the proposal earlier this year.
