TAIPEI/HONG KONG (June 18): For Hong Kong resident Yung Xiu Kwan, 67, a proposed extradition law that would allow people in the former British colony to be sent to mainland China for trial was the final straw.

US preparing to sell over $2.7 bil in weapons to Taiwan, testing China: Reuters sources

WASHINGTON (June 6): The United States is pursuing the sale of more than US$2 billion ($2.7 billion) worth of tanks and weapons to Taiwan, four people familiar with the negotiations said, in a move likely to anger China as a trade war between the world’s two biggest economies escalates.

An informal notification of the proposed sale has been sent to the US Congress, the four sources said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the possible deal.

Cordlife acquires private cord blood bank in Hong Kong for $9.3 mil with debt

SINGAPORE (Jan 3): Cordlife Group is fully acquiring a private cord blood bank in Hong Kong, HealthBaby Hong Kong, for US$7 million in cash ($9.3 million) after adjusting for US$2.5 million in the company’s cash and bank loans that will remain in place.

As part of the transaction, the group will also assume the vendor’s debt of HK$138.2 million ($23.5 million) owed to HealthBaby Hong Kong, which it will treat as an intercompany loan owing to its new subsidiary.

Jumbo announces opening of first Jumbo Seafood franchise outlet in Taiwan

SINGAPORE (Dec 19): The Jumbo Group of Restaurants, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jumbo Group, has entered into a franchise agreement with Ho Sing Food for the latter to establish and operate the Jumbo Seafood brand of restaurants in Taiwan.

The deal was signed last Thursday, and the first Jumbo Seafood outlet in Taiwan opened last Saturday at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (Xin Yi) in Taipei.
