StarHub to lay off 300 employees as telco commences strategic review

SINGAPORE (Oct 3): StarHub is embarking on a strategic transformation review that will include laying off an estimated 300 of its full-time staff, primarily those in non-customer facing functions, with those affected to be notified by the end of this month.

In an aftermarket press statement issued on Wednesday, the telco attributes the decision to “ongoing natural attrition and tighter management of contractor roles [which] will result in additional roles being made redundant”.

IBM partners IMDA to roll out 'New Collar Apprenticeship' initiative after layoffs in Singapore

SINGAPORE (Aug 16): International Business Machines (IBM) is joining the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s (IMDA) Company-Led Training programme under its TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) initiative to roll out their first “New Collar Apprenticeship” initiative outside of the US.

Through the apprenticeships, IBM Singapore intends to also employ and train non-degree holders for infocomm technology (ICT) jobs within the technology industry.

Boeing to dismiss hundreds of engineers amid sales slowdown

CHICAGO (April 18): Boeing Co. plans to lay off hundreds of engineers in Washington state and other locations -- and may eliminate more jobs later this year as the planemaker contends with slowing aircraft sales.

The manufacturer plans to hand out pink slips on Friday, the same day that 305 engineers and technical workers will leave voluntarily under an earlier buyout offer. Boeing has pared 1,332 of the jobs from its Seattle-area manufacturing center since the start of 2016, according to SPEEA, the union representing the workers.

Singapore registers lowest labour force growth in 2016 in over a decade as layoffs continue to rise

SINGAPORE (Jan 26): Preliminary estimates from the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM’s) latest Labour Market Advance Release have indicated that 2016 was once again a year of increased layoffs and redundancies among Singapore’s residents and citizens as the republic’s economy slowed, as did its total employment and income growth rates.

For the full year, the annual average unemployment rate was at its highest since 2010 for overall (2.1% from 1.9% in 2015), residents (3% from 2.8%), and citizens (3.1% from 2.9%) – rising across the board for most age and education groups.
