Enterprise Singapore and Bpifrance call for proposals on joint France-Singapore innovation projects

SINGAPORE (Sept 18): Enterprise Singapore and Bpifrance are calling for proposals on joint innovation projects in technological and application areas including advanced manufacturing, clean technology and medical technology.

Enterprise Singapore is a statutory board under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, while Bpifrance is the agency charged to help French companies develop by providing assistance and financial support.

Najib's associate charged over French submarine deal linked to murder of Mongolian translator

PARIS (Aug 2): A close associate of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been charged in France over alleged kickbacks in the 2002 sale of submarines to his country, a judicial source told AFP on Tuesday.

Abdul Razak Baginda (AFP file photo) advised Najib when the now-prime minister was defence minister between 2000 and 2008. Najib oversaw the deal worth nearly one billion euros (US$1.18 billion) to buy two Scorpene-class submarines and one Agosta-class submarine from French naval dockyards unit DCN, which is linked to French defence group Thales.

France's Le Pen launches election bid with vow to fight globalisation

LYON, FRANCE (Feb 5): France's far-right party leader Marine Le Pen on Sunday told thousands of flag-waving supporters chanting "This is our country!" that she alone could protect them against Islamic fundamentalism and globalisation if elected president in May.

Buoyed by the election of President Donald Trump in the United States and by Britons' vote to leave the European Union, Le Pen's anti-immigration, anti-EU National Front (FN) hopes for similar populist momentum in France.

CapitaLand to open 8 shopping malls in 2017, seeks retailers at MAPIC in Cannes

SINGAPORE (Nov 17): CapitaLand intends to open eight new shopping malls in 2017, six of which are retail components of integrated developments in China, and one each in Malaysia and India.

These are namely Raffles City Changning and LuOne in Shanghai; Raffles City Shenzhen; Raffles City Hangzhou; Suzhou Center Mall; and CapitaMall Westgate in Wuhan. The other two are Melawati Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Forum Mall in Mysore, India.

The top fintech companies come from this Asian country

SINGAPORE (Oct 24): China’s fintech companies are coming out tops among leading fintech innovators globally, with 4 out of the five best companies coming from the country.

The ranking is based on the annual list of the leading 50 established fintech innovators compiled by Fintech Innovators, a collaboration between fintech investment firm H2 Ventures and KPMG Fintech. The list also includes a list of the top 50 emerging stars, or new fintech startups which offer innovative and disruptive ideas.


Vard wins luxury cruise shipbuilding contract from Ponant

SINGAPORE (Aug 12): Vard Holdings, a designer and shipbuilder of offshore and specialised vessels, has won a contract with French cruise company Ponant to build four luxury expedition cruise vessels for an undisclosed sum.

Ponant is a subsidiary of Artemis Group and headquartered in Marseille, France.

It was previously announced on March 16 that a Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed between the Vard and Ponant for the construction of the vessels.

SIA to face earnings headwinds from European unrest

SINGAPORE (July 19): UOB Kay Hian is maintaining its “hold” recommendation on Singapore Airlines (SIA) with a marginally reduced target price of $11.50 from $11.60 previously, on the political and social unrest that has been plaguing Europe in recent times.  

This comes after the 14 July Bastille Day attack in Nice as well as a failed military coup attempt in Turkey on 16 July.
