ST Engineering and Vuzix launch Augmented Intelligence smart glasses platform

SINGAPORE (Jan 7): ST Engineering and Vuzix Corporation, the developer of smart glasses and Augmented Reality (AR) products, have launched the world’s first Augmented Intelligence, biometric-enabled smart glasses platform.

Developed by ST Engineering’s electronics division, the platform as a service (PaaS) is a new pay-per-use application integrated with Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses, enabling hands-free identification.

The PaaS Smart Glass solution will be available for preview at CES 2019 from tomorrow to Friday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

VR coming to a theatre or mall near you

SINGAPORE (Sept 28): Silicon Valley had hoped for virtual reality (VR) headsets to be a bestseller among consumers.

But this did not happen as many end users still do not own a computer powerful enough at home to make most of the equipment.

Still, VR’s slow start among consumers may turn out to be a good thing for retailers.

Tech and media groups are investing in VR experiences designed especially for shopping malls and movie theatres, as retailers try to up their game against the rise of Amazon and Netflix.

(Sept 13): Apple Inc. packed its $1,000 ($1,350) iPhone with augmented reality features, betting the nascent technology will persuade consumers to pay premium prices for its products even as cheaper alternatives abound.

The iPhone X, Apple’s most expensive phone ever, was one of three new models Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook showed off during an event at the company’s new US$5 billion headquarters in Cupertino, California, on Tuesday. It also rolled out an updated Apple Watch with a cellular connection and an Apple TV set-top box that supports higher-definition video.

SATS to introduce augmented reality smart glasses in ramp handling operations

SINGAPORE (Sept 5): Gateway services and food solutions provider SATS has announced that it is introducing augmented reality (AR) smart glasses in its ramp handling operations.

The wearable device will provide SATS’ ramp handling staff with critical information such as loading instructions in real-time.


Emerging technology poised to take off in 2017

SINGAPORE (Jan 4): Emerging technology such as smart homes, digital assistant devices, virtual reality, and drones could drive the US consumer technology industry to record-high retail revenues of US$292 billion ($423 billion) in 2017.

This is according to an industry report published Tuesday by US-based Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

The CTA consensus forecast reflects US factory sales-to-dealers for more than 300 consumer tech products.
