The curated effect

SINGAPORE (May 6): It is not enough today to merely indulge in the pleasure a luxury product affords — one must also gain an understanding of its history, its heritage… its raison d’etre. In the light of this, the house of Hermès has been orchestrating a periodic series of exhibitions that aim to do just that, via a beautiful and complete brand immersion that allows an open dialogue between the visitor and the maison, juxtaposing all the wealth of its archives with more contemporary offerings.

Exquisite art coming up for sale

The Edge Auction 2019 has on offer highly desirable and collectible artworks by top Malaysian artists as well as leading contemporary artists from Southeast Asia.

SINGAPORE (Mar 4): The seventh edition of The Edge Auction will see 105 lots comprising modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks go under the hammer on March 17. The cover lot, Kambing Hitam (2009), is a painting by Malaysian contemporary artist Hamir Soib @ Mohamed and has an estimated price of between RM80,000 ($26,519) and RM150,000.

Sweet success

Famed for her whimsical confectionery and desserts, pastry chef Janice Wong is also an artist, an entrepreneur and the face of her fast-growing empire of all things edible

SINGAPORE (Jan 28): A little over five years ago, Janice Wong was best known as the chef-owner of 2am:dessertbar, a late-night dessert hideout on the second floor of a shophouse in Holland Village. Her name has since evolved into an F&B brand of its own — one with a strong presence in Singapore, Japan, Macau and, more recently, the UK.

Balancing act

Bell & Ross founder and CEO Carlos Rosillo on why ‘balance’  is the key to design, business and life

SINGAPORE (Dec 17): One could be forgiven for mistaking Carlos Rosillo for a creative director. With his safari-style khaki jacket and matching pants, a newsboy cap and round black-rimmed spectacles as well as greying moustache and beard, Rosillo looks like an artist.

Man and machine

SINGAPORE (Oct 1): Like every other Urwerk timepiece, the UR-111C took a total of about three years to build, assemble and develop before it was finally launched in 2018. But co-founder and chief designer Martin Frei says the idea for this model can be traced back to as early as his childhood, specifically one of his earliest memories of a traditional light meter owned by his late father, who worked as an engineer. A light meter is an electronic measuring device that is often used by photographers to generate and control exposure.

Designer spotlight

SINGAPORE (Aug 6): Singapore fashion need not take a back seat to her counterparts in Europe or the US. Take a look at how these brands are carving a niche for themselves in this very competitive industry called style.

The meticulous artist

Noor Mahnun conveys notions of domesticity, femininity and social causes through her intricate paintings
Noor Mahnun Mohamed, widely known as Anum on the Malaysian art scene, may be petite but she ably juggles the roles of painter, curator, writer and educationist.

Born in 1964 in Kelantan, she graduated with a master’s degree in fine art from Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Braunschweig, Germany, in 1996.

These are the young female artists to watch

(Oct 23): Loie Hollowell ignited frenzied buying at Frieze London art fair this month.

The 34-year-old, who makes sexually suggestive landscapes reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe, saw her pastels snapped up by collectors in minutes and a wait list for future works double. Prices for her paintings more than tripled since her first solo show two years ago.
