The mid-year school holidays are here and this animated movie is sure to delight the family. The story centres on Terry, a child who is taken to the Kingdom of Groovynham, where the evil wizard The Grump has forbidden his subjects from smiling or laughing. Terry and his friends are determined to save the day and bring happiness back to Groovynham. Voice talents include Ian McShane, Toby Kebbell and Lily Collins. Movie opens on June 7.
Sounds of the Frontier
The woodwind instrument sheng gets its spotlight at the Singapore Chinese Orchestra concert titled Sounds of the Frontier. Sheng master Wu Tong will perform together with music director Tsung Yeh, who is also the pianist for this concert. Wu is a multi-talented musician who has performed at multiple festivals, such as the Beijing TV Spring Festival, where he played the sheng and sang Jasmine alongside Dimash Kudaibergen.

Seven artists with disabilities show us the world as viewed through their eyes. Chang Kim Ngoh, Eugene Soh, Lee Mun Choong, Lee Wei Kong, Ng Siang Hoi, Raymond Lau Poo Seng and Stanley Lim Min Chieh display pictures of idyllic kampong scenes and landscapes of Singapore in The View from Here. The exhibition, curated by Kinetic Singapore, is held in partnership with Very Special Arts Singapore, a registered charity under the National Council of Social Service.

Curated by Khairuddin Hori, this exhibition is held in conjunction with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts’ (NAFA) 80th anniversary celebrations. Alma Matter is a visual art exhibition organised in collaboration with the NAFA Fine Art Alumni Chapter and Chan + Hori Contemporary. It features artists who have graduated from the academy in the past 10 years. The exhibition takes its inspiration from a wordplay of “alma mater” — which typically refers to an institution one has studied in and graduated from. In its original Latin form, “alma” refers to the act of nourishing. It is paired here with “matter” — to mean affairs relating to the concerns and practices of the artists. Placed together, Alma Matter alludes to the artists’ past training at the academy while simultaneously examining their place in the contemporary art landscape.
