Within the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) segment, United Overseas Bank (UOB) is known as the market leader in Singapore and the region, says Eric Tham, head of group commercial banking at UOB.

“We have been dealing with SMEs for more than 80 years. One of our core businesses is with SMEs; it’s one of the significant revenue generators for UOB,” Tham tells The Edge Singapore. “So, we think we can speak on behalf of the SMEs, based on our understanding of the SMEs and the challenges and aspirations they have, not just in Singapore but in the region as well.”

“It’s not easy doing business with SMEs,” says Tham. “Most SMEs are not exceptionally well-capitalised and they need banks who have the resources.”
