Economic numbers are coming in more robust than earlier estimates for both economies. In the US, the unemployment rate fell to 4.3% in July, the lowest since the global financial crisis. Last month’s retail sales rose 0.6% y-o-y, following declines in May and June. Consumer demand accounts for 70% of the US economy.

Singapore’s annual GDP growth for the second quarter accelerated to 2.9%, up from 2.5% in the first quarter. On a quarterly basis, growth rose to 2.6%. This was a sharp turnaround from a quarterly contraction of 1.9% in the first quarter. Elsewhere, GDP in the 19 countries that use the euro expanded 0.6% y-o-y in 2Q2017, up from 0.5% in 1Q2017. Annual Japanese growth surged to 4% in the second quarter.
