SINGAPORE (Apr 8): Outside the usually silent High Court building in Kuala Lumpur on April 3, two busloads of Najib Abdul Razak’s supporters shouted “Bossku!” (my boss) and “Hidup Najib”, a rallying cry in his support among his ardent fans. Some 20 of these fans even posed for photographers, at the steps just outside the main entrance. One of them, according to news reports, even declared that the former Malaysian prime minister was “the only right man to rule the country” and pledged to support him “forever”. “We are not supporters of Najib. We are part of him!” this man added.

Inside the packed courtroom, local and international media, family members as well as close aides of Najib waited for the highly anticipated trial to begin. Just before 2pm, Najib, dressed in a well-fitted navy blue suit and a boldly patterned purple tie, looked calm as he walked into the High Court building amid the flurry of camera clicks and flashes. As he was led into the docks, he was confident and smiling.

His day in court had come.
