SINGAPORE (Mar 12): Exchange-traded funds attracted inflows of US$269 billion ($355 billion) in the past year alone. Assets under management of ETFs overtook those of hedge funds in 2016; as at August last year, global ETF AUM topped U$4 trillion.

Equity-based ETFs that track popular market indices such as the Standard and Poor’s 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, MSCI indices and our own Straits Times Index comprise some 78% of ETF AUM. Fixed-income ETFs make up around 17% of ETF AUM. US equities and the indices they track are of course the largest in terms of market share in AUM.
