SINGAPORE (Aug 26): The Edge Singapore scooped up two awards at the SGX Orb Awards on Aug 21, after receiving five nominations across six categories.

Ben Paul, our editor-at-large, won the Story of the Year — Securities award for a piece titled “<a href="http://www.theedgesingapore.com/views/commentary/buffetts-methods-ought-be-much-inspiration-corporate-boards-investors" target="_blank">Buffett’s methods ought to be as much of an inspiration to corporate boards as to investors</a>” (Issue 881, May 13). Paul had compared the manner in which billionaire investor Warren Buffett reports the performance of Berkshire Hathaway to his fellow shareholders with the way the boards and top management of Singapore-listed companies engage the market. “In my view, investors are not drawn to Berkshire only because of Buffett’s enormously successful investment approach,” Paul wrote. “Many of them simply like being treated as real owners of the businesses under the group.”

Paul received the award from Singapore Exchange CEO Loh Boon Chye. “Being recognised in this way is a great honour,” Paul said immediately after receiving the award. “Everyone at The Edge Singapore works very hard every day to uncover stories and present ideas and perspectives that are useful to our readers, many of whom are investors and stakeholders in the market ecosystem.”

Trinity Chua, assistant editor at The Edge Singapore, picked up the #SGX20 award, a special category to mark the 20th anniversary of SGX’s formation in 1999. Her winning piece was titled “<a href="http://www.theedgesingapore.com/views/sustainability/sustainability-key-sustain-thriving-sgx-next-20-years" target="_blank">Sustainability is key to sustain a thriving SGX for the next 20 years</a>”. Chua said her story underscored how more investors are paying attention to the impact that sustainability issues have on companies’ financial performance. “It’s something The Edge Singapore has been highlighting for a while.”

Other key awards included Story of the Year — Derivatives, which went to Tan Huileng of CNBC.com; and The Hidden Gem, which went to Marissa Lee of the Business Times for a piece about Isetan. Financial literacy website DollarsandSense.sg picked up the accolade for financial blogs or independent investment-related websites that empower investors, while a category for multimedia went to He Ruiming and Goh Wei Choon for The Woke Salaryman.

The SGX Orb Awards seeks to recognise excellence in financial news and content in an evolving media landscape, and is part of SGX’s efforts to enhance financial education and empower individuals to become sav­vier investors. The awards are open to all local and overseas producers of content that demonstrate relevance to Singapore as a financial hub. Some 120 entries were submitted this year. On the judging panel were ­Cheung Pui Yuen, CEO of Deloitte Singapore; James Crabtree, associate professor of practice at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy; Nandini Sukumar, CEO of the World Federation of Exchanges; and Virginie Maisonneuve, CIO of Eastspring Investments.
