SINGAPORE (Mar 6): American telco conglomerate AT&T has joined the Global Telco Security Alliance – which was launched in April 2018 by four telecommunications operators around the world including Singtel – as an equal member of the group.

With this, the cybersecurity-focused alliance now has a total of five founding members, namely: Singtel (Singapore), AT&T (North America), Etisalat (UAE), SoftBank Corp (Japan) and Telefónica (Spain).

In a press release issued by Singtel on Wednesday, the telco says AT&T’s addition represents a step-up in insources and insights offered by the alliance as a whole.

AT&T’s recent acquisition of cybersecurity company AlienVault has also reinforced its extensive cybersecurity capabilities and technologies, allowing it to “accelerate delivering on its [AT&T’s] vision of enabling organisations of all sizes with effective cybersecurity solutions”, adds Singtel.

Combined, the alliance’s members now cover more than 1.2 billion customers in more than 60 countries across Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas, as well as over 6,000 security experts with a network of more than 28 security operations centres.

Looking ahead, Singtel says Global Telco Security Alliance intends to expand its scope of activities and global footprint over time, and is open to adding new members in the future.

“Hackers have well-established and organised communities that cooperate to produce cyber threats and it’s time large network operators work together to help deliver disruptive innovations and enable our global customers to detect and respond to threats faster and protect their digital footprint,” comments Barmak Meftah, president, AT&T Cybersecurity.

As at 10:34am, shares in Singtel are trading flat at $2.99.
