SINGAPORE (Mar 5): Justice Hoo Sheau Peng has dismissed John Soh Chee Wen’s latest bid for bail, on the grounds that Soh is a flight risk and may tamper with witnesses. Hoo also noted that some of the charges Soh faces are non-bailable offences. Soh may file an appeal.

On Feb 27, in court, Hoo noted that Soh has no family ties in Singapore. Moreover, he had previously claimed to have travelled freely in and out of Singapore between 1999 and 2002. Yet, a check with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) showed “no evidence” of Soh entering and leaving the country, said Hoo. “[Soh] has ways and means to leave Singapore undetected.”

Hoo also agreed with prosecutors that Soh has tampered with witnesses. “There is some evidence of tampering over a considerable period of time,” she said. “Should [Soh] be granted bail, there is a considerable chance of tampering. This further tilts the balance against the grant of bail.”
