SINGAPORE (Oct 11): Giant today announced the launch of VendMart, the concept of several vending machines retailing products from local companies under a single roof, at its Tampines and IMM Jurong hypermarkets.

In a press release on Wednesday, the supermarket chain says VendMart is a first-of-its-kind partnership with local companies to bring together a total of 17 vending machines, offering products and services from brands such as restaurateur House of Seafood and food manufacturer Mr Popiah, as well as Farmily, a gardening tool supplier.

A dedicated Halal and Islamic vending machine is also available, and contains essential oils and headscarves, among other items, for retail.

To further build on its “retail-tainment” concept, Giant has also collaborated with partners such as K Cuts and Innovative Retail to provide experiences tailored for children, including haircuts for kids and entertainment rides.

Ruald Swart, CEO of Giant, Dairy Farm Singapore, describes the trend of vending machines as one that has been sweeping the world by storm.

“We saw [this as] an opportunity to elevate [the trend] on a scale that customers have not experienced before… [Giant] is also the perfect platform to hero the innovative spirit and drive of local brands and startups,” says Swart.

“At Giant, we are always putting ourselves in the shoes of customers and thinking how we can make their visits fresh and exciting over and over again. We’re not just in the business of retail but retail-tainment,” he adds.
