SINGAPORE (July 9): Last year, the Civil Aviation Administration of China gave permission to Nasdaq-listed JD.com and Shenzhen-listed SF Holding Co to deliver small packages in rural areas using drones. SF Holding is one of the largest courier firms in China. JD.com is a competitor of Alibaba Group Holding.

JD.com began developing its drone delivery programme in October 2015; the company started trials in June 2016, and has since completed thousands of test flights. “[Our] programme is believed to be the first broad commercial e-commerce application of drone technology in the world,” it says.

Its drones use a proprietary technology developed at JDX, JD.com’s research and logistics innovation lab. The JD Drone programme delivers packages to remote rural communities in China, a population currently underserved by the e-commerce industry.
