I will readily admit I am not a big fan of the Olympics.

I was reluctantly dragged along to the Chinese-only opening of the “bird’s nest” shaped Beijing National Stadium in early 2008, and I featured on the big centre screen as one of the very few Caucasian faces in the crowd.

China used the 2008 Summer Olympics as a coming out event, highlighting its engagement with the world in global events.
