Taiwan will formally start talks with Singapore on a trade accord early next year after signing an agreement with China in June.
Feasibility studies show an economic cooperation agreement would offer “significant mutual benefits,” the trade offices of the two sides said in a joint statement today. The statement didn’t give details of dates or where the talks will be held.
Taiwan signed its first trade accord with China in June, strengthening commercial ties with the world’s fastest-growing major economy and the island’s biggest trading partner and investment destination. Singapore is Taiwan’s sixth-largest trading partner.
Taiwan’s international relations are complicated by China’s insistence that the island is part of its territory and that any attempt to treat it as a sovereign state is unacceptable.
