Trek 2000 International (5AB.SG) surges, +6.0% at $0.440 vs flat at $0.415 midday after it says won ruling in US court that ThumbDrive trademark entitled to full registration with US Patent and Trademark Office; means Trek world’s only manufacturer that can sell flash drives under ThumbDrive brand.

But analyst at local brokerage says knee-jerk gain may be down to confusion over Trek’s statement; “some people may be thinking the company will get damages based on this, but it’s not a patent (on technology), just a trademark.”

Says decision “a paper victory at best, they’re saying it will increase the public’s awareness of Thumbdrive, but it’s as generic as Scotch Tape these days.”
