C&G Environmental Protection Holdings, the emerging player in China’s renewable Waste-To-Energy (WTE) sector, says it has received RMB16 million ($3.1 million) for its Huangshi Phase 1 WTE project from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China as a award as an encouragement for the WTE projects.

The recognition by NDRC follows awards received by two of the group’s 10 WTE projects in July 2010. Its Huian and Huangshi WTE plants received the national Technology Demonstration Project award given by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China in recognition of their ability to adopt highly advanced sub-high temperature and sub-high pressure reciprocating wastes incinerators and dual exhaust treatment technologies.

The group’s Huangshi Phase 1 WTE project is currently in the last stage of construction and is in the midst of connecting to the state electricity grid, which is scheduled to be finished within this year. Huangshi Phase 1 WTE project will then commence full scale operation after a 3-6 months’ testing period.

Upon the completion of three WTE projects namely Huangshi, Huian and Anxi , C&G will double its waste treatment capacity from 1,800 tonnes per day at mid 2010 to 3,600 tonnes per day by the end of the year. The Group will then be able to treat municipal solid waste of as much as 1.2 million tonnes per annum and generate electricity of 480 million kWh.

The NDRC has been allotted a total of RMB2.2 billion of the central government budget to support the development of 10 key energy saving categories, including urban sewage and garbage treatment. The central government also plans to invest RMB500 billion to treat solid waste as part of its 12th Five-Year Plan, of which RMB100 billion will be used in domestic garbage disposal. Combined with the rise of urbanization rate, the increase of domestic garbage generated per person, as well as the ongoing substitution of landfill methods, China’s WTE treatment demand is set to increase by at least 15–20% within the next five years.
