STI rises 0.4% to 3,022.28 at closing

Singapore’s Straits Times Index rose 0.4% to 3,022.28 at the close. About five stocks advanced for each that fell on the 30-member gauge.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.7 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.4 times at the beginning of the year, according to Bloomberg data. The following shares were among the most active in the market. 
 
Bulk shipping companies: The Baltic Dry Index, which measures the cost of shipping commodities, gained 2% in London yesterday, extending its rally for an eighth day.
 
Cosco Corp. Singapore (COS SP), a China-based shipbuilder that also operates bulk carriers, advanced 1.2% to $1.64. Neptune Orient Lines. (NOL SP), Southeast Asia’s biggest container carrier, rose 1% to $2.
 
Palm-oil suppliers: Crude palm oil for November delivery increased 1.8% in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, extending its three-day advance to 5.4%.
 
Golden Agri-Resources (GGR SP), the world’s second- biggest palm-oil producer gained 0.9% to 58.5 cents. Indofood Agri Resources (IFAR SP), the palm plantation unit of Indonesia’ biggest noodle maker, added 0.4% to $2.35.
 
Ho Bee Investment (HOBEE SP), a Singapore-based property developer, advanced 1.3% to $1.56, extending its three-day increase to 4%. Kim Eng Holdings initiated coverage of the stock with a ”buy” rating yesterday. Yi Tung Ooi, an analyst at Kim Eng Securities, has a 12-month share-price forecast of $1.91 for Ho Bee.
 
Singapore Airlines (SIA SP), the world’s second- biggest carrier by market value, rallied 1.1% to S$16. The airline said it got approval from Spain’s Civil Aviation Authority to start flights between Barcelona and Sao Paulo in Brazil in an e-mailed statement.
