ST Engineering announced today that a consortium formed by its marine arm, Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd (ST Marine) and its Brunei partner QAF Limited, has been awarded a $66.5m contract to design and construct a waste management facility in Sungai Paku, Brunei. The project will comprise an engineered landfill, a transfer station plus three years of operations and maintenance of the facility.

The design and construction of the modern Integrated Waste Management facility is expected to start in late 2010 and will take about 18 months to complete. The tender awarded by the Brunei Economic Development Board was won through an international public tender.

The Sungai Paku waste treatment facility is designated to serve as a permanent waste disposal site for Brunei. It will be designed and constructed to the USA Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.

The engineered landfill facility will be prepared using heavy duty liners and feature a leachate treatment facility, as well as come with environmental monitoring, gas extraction, harvesting and odour control systems. A waste transfer & logistics station will be constructed opposite the current closed landfill site in Sungai Akar and will serve as a hub to consolidate, pack and transfer waste using large containerised vehicles from the city to Sungai Paku treatment plant.
